Domestic violence isn't my business.
Or is it?

Did you know that...
  • Domestic violence costs businesses $3 - 5 billion annually in medical expenses and another $100 million in lost wages, absenteeism and reduced productivity.

  • In 2005, 21% of employed adults in the United States were victims of domestic violence.

  • 96% of employees who were domestic violence victims reported some type of problem in the workplace - such as stalking or harassment - as a result of their abuse.

  • Even if a woman's abusive partner does not work at her company, her employer may be liable if the abuser creates a hostile environment at her workplace.

  • 91% of corporate leaders believe that violence against women affects both the private and working lives of their employees, yet only 12% say that corporations should play a major role in addressing the issue.

Are your employees safe? Is your company protected?

Violence at home doesn't just stay at home.
At Safe Horizon, we know that domestic violence impacts the lives of thousands of working women and men every day and affects the financial strength and success of the companies for which they work. Through training, education, public awareness and innovative initiatives, SafeWork is a national movement to challenge corporate leaders to recognize domestic violence in the workplace and take action to address it.

Since October 2005, SafeWork has reached more than 140 executives at 70 companies. We have furthered our outreach through our media efforts, which generated over 2 million impressions in print media alone. SafeWork has been featured in The New York Times, ABC World News Tonight, NPR Marketplace, Newsday, AMNY, and WNBC Weekend Today, raising awareness of the impact of domestic violence in the workplace.

In 2007, Safe Horizon will launch SafeWork 2010, an initiative to secure the commitment of 20% of Fortune 500 CEOs by 2010 to join the SafeWork movement and pledge to one of ten ways to keep their employee safe and protect their bottom line.

Education and Training

Through the use of (Un)Safe, an original dramatic piece commissioned by Safe Horizon and a facilitated workshop, SafeWork training provides a unique first-hand understanding of domestic violence in the workplace. Workshop participants learn what they can do to help their employees as well as protect the company?s bottom line. Participants each receive a practical toolkit to support their efforts moving forward in addressing this business issue.
